Deposit protection scheme

Since 6 April 2007 all landlords and letting agents taking deposits for assured short-hold tenancies (ASTs) in England and Wales are required to join a Government accredited deposit protection scheme, also known as the tenancy deposit scheme. This is to safeguard all the deposits landlords and agents take.

To avoid disputes going to court, each tenancy deposit scheme is supported by an alternative dispute resolution service (ADR) whose aim is to make disputes faster to resolve.
